The British Council and the British Fashion Council (BFC) announce the inaugural International Fashion Showcase to take place during London Fashion Week, February 2012.

19 embassies and cultural institutes across London will open their doors and display the work of over 80 international emerging fashion designers. The public, together with international press and buyers, will have the opportunity to explore the collections of some of the most innovative, emerging fashion designers from around the world.

The first project the British Council and the British Fashion Council have collaborated on, this new showcase is part of the Fashion 2012 Cultural Programme and has been developed to celebrate the year of the Olympics and Paralympics and honour its values of international respect, excellence, equality and friendship.

Countries participating in this showcase include Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Caribbean, China, Croatia, Estonia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Nigeria, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Sierra Leone, United States and Uzbekistan.

Each country has been asked to present a selection of emerging designers whom they feel most represents the future of fashion in their region. Sarah Mower MBE, BFC Ambassador for Emerging Talent and Contributing Editor to US Vogue, will chair an advisory panel that will judge each piece of work, with an award given to the country that presents the best emerging fashion talent showcase. This will be announced on Sunday 19th February, during London Fashion Week.

A map, guide and passport will encourage the public and London Fashion Week audience of UK and international press and buyers to follow the trail of the International Fashion Showcase around the various venues in central London.

British Fashion Council CEO welcomes Tillman extension

The British Fashion Council (BFC) announced that its honorary Chairman, Harold Tillman CBE, will extend his term through 2012.

Harold was appointed Chairman on 24th January 2008 taking over from Sir Stuart Rose. Under his guidance the BFC has become an effective promotional body for the industry through clarity of objectives and vision.

He has established the first full time management team for the organisation through the appointment of Caroline Rush to CEO and Simon Ward as COO. He played a lead role in moving London Fashion Week to Somerset House, personally negotiating with brands such as Burberry to return to London.

The BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund was established as a registered charity with Harold securing financial support from key retailers and partners. He has maintained close relationships with the Mayor of London each year successfully bidding for support for British talent and London Fashion Week.

In 2010 Harold delivered the Value of Fashion report, defining the British fashion industry for the first time and assessing its true value to UK PLC. Internationally-acclaimed fashion designers Donna Karan accompanied Haitian Minister of the Interior, Thierry Mayard-Paul, as he visited the cities of Jeremiah and Jacmel during his "listening campaign."

The visits, a continuation of the Minister's tour of Haiti's heartland, are aimed at advancing the government's goals for building a sustainable economy through investments that support decentralization and drive job creation across all sectors, and throughout all the communities of Haiti.

Minister Mayard Paul and Ms. Karan met with Jacmel's Tourism Minister Ms. Stephanie B. Villedrouin and visited several hotels and tourist sites damaged by the January 2010 earthquake, including the Hotel Florita, the Jacmelienne Hotel and other severely damaged structures along the coast of the Southeast.

According to the Minister, these structures hold investment opportunities for the region. "Prior to the earthquake, Jacmel was one of Haiti's wealthiest cities, with considerable tourist assets," said Mayard-Paul. "With its favorable location, it holds great potential for development and job creation for this region."

In visiting the city of Jeremiah, Mayard-Paul solicited the needs of residents, and vowed to deliver on their requests for jobs through the ongoing efforts of the Martelly government to make Haiti a country favorable to business for national and international investors.

To that end, the Minister of the Interior escorted Ms. Karan to an exhibition of local art and handicrafts on Jeremiah's city square. Accomplished Georgian-American designer Patuna Bushyhead will show her latest ethereal designs at Couture Fashion Week at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday February 18, 2012. Marking the fashion designers first appearance at CFW, the fashion show will be held in the legendary Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria on Park Avenue, New York City. A native of the Republic of Georgia, now a U.S. citizen, Patuna Bushyhead spent her childhood studying and performing ballet, acting, folkloric dance, classical piano, painting, and pantomime. As a teenager she served as host of two nationally broadcast TV programs in Georgia. At age 16 she entered the Tbilisi State Institute to study gynecology, and later switched her field of study to dentistry, graduating top of her class as a doctor of dental surgery.

After working in a private dental practice, she met her American husband and they spent the next few years traveling the world including the USA, Mexico Western Europe, Russia, and the UAE, among other destinations. In 2008, Ms. Bushyhead made a career change from dentistry to her real passion: fashion. She is currently the owner and director of Patuna Fashion House.

In recent years, Ms. Bushyhead studied sketching with a professional tutor on anatomy, dress/shoe design and portraiture, and earned a degree in fashion merchandising and design, sewing/dressmaking and cosmetology/esthetics. Using her own technique of applying Swarovski crystals to her designs, Ms. Bushyhead created a dress for a fashion show in Georgia themed: "Beauty will survive the world." She applied over 2,000 Swarovski stones by hand depicting the map of Georgia and the phrase "I love my Georgia!" The flowing dress represents the Georgian National Grape Tree.

Rue Madame unveils third store in Hong Kong

Paris-based fashion retailer Rue Madame announced the opening of its third store in Hong Kong to capture growing opportunities in the city’s fast-growing fashion market.

The new store at Silvercord, Tsim Sha Tsui, also sets a milestone for Rue Madame as its first outlet in Kowloon. Its two other stores, at Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay and the IFC Mall in Central, opened in 2010.

Rue Madame is a fashion concept boutique chain for women, retailing well-known Parisian brands including Maje, Sandro, Claudie Pierlot, American Vintage, Majestic, Toupy, Sessun, Dress Gallery, Gat Rimon and more.

When founder Ariane Zagury first came to Hong Kong, Rue Madame looked towards the city’s diverse clientelle to support its latest expansion. Ms Zagury noted that the company’s Hong Kong patrons have a strong desire for fashionable brands and a Parisian label is a big attraction.

“Two years ago we saw a niche for fashionable brands between the luxury brands and mass retailers and we moved quickly. Today, our strategy is working just fine,” Ms Zagury said.

B'desh RMG exports to grow 15% in FY12 - Experts

Bangladesh readymade garment (RMG) exports are likely to grow by around 15 percent in 2011-12 over last fiscal, according to experts.

As per the statistics released for the first five months of the current fiscal by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh’s overall exports have grown by 18 percent year-on-year compared to a growth rate of 40 percent y-o-y observed last fiscal.

In July this year, exports from Bangladesh rose by 28.7 percent y-o-y, followed by a rise by 32.4 percent y-o-y in August. However, the growth rate declined to 2.29 percent y-o-y in September, 15.44 percent in October and 2.4 percent in November.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Mr. Shubhashish Bose, Vice Chairman of EPB, said, “Bangladesh’s export target for 2011-12 is US$ 26.5 billion, which is much more than last year. We have figures from July to November 2011 and our exports have been worth US$ 9 billion during the five-month period and we hope we will be able to achieve our targets by the end of the year.”

“Out of the total exports, the RMG sector constitutes about 78-80 percent,” he informs.

Analysing the figures, Prof. Mustafizur Rahman, Executive Director of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), says, “Last year, the growth rate was 40 percent because the global demand was rising and 40 percent is an exceptionally high rate. But, one cannot expect the exports to grow at such a high rate every year. So, 18 percent growth rate on top of the 40 percent growth rate of last year is a remarkable growth.”

“For the garment sector, the prices of raw materials, i.e. cotton and yarn, have come down by 50-60 percent compared to last year. So, the price level and the cut and making charges being offered are somewhat lower this year. In light of these factors, the growth rate can be termed as significant,” he adds.

He further explains, “The profit margins have come down this year. And, because there has been a depressed demand in the markets of US and Europe, some shift is taking place from China to Bangladesh on offer of lower prices, which is benefiting the garment industry. The best garment, designed and made by the students, are carefully selected by the lecturers. “Every year Fashion Fusion seems to set new standards”, says the Head of the UJ Department of Fashion Design, Mrs Desiree Smal.

This year Fashion Fusion took the format of a live fashion interaction. Guests were not only able to meet the designers and talk about the inspiration behind their designs, but also view the original sketches and get up close to the garments. This is along the lines of the latest international exhibiting trends for fashion, called ‘pop-up shops’.

Leading department store, John Lewis, reported that sales last week (to Saturday 3 December 2011) rose 9.6 per cent year on year to hit £113.6m. This represents a 15.1 per cent rise in sales on the previous week and shows that John Lewis customers are forging ahead with their Christmas shopping.

While the figures were flattered by the snow which caused disruption to trade this time last year, sales were up 10.9 per cent on the same week two years ago, indicating a robust underlying trading performance.

Fashion trade was particularly brisk last week as the colder weather drove sales of coat, gloves and scarves as well as men's and women's cashmere, slippers and dressing gowns.

As customers continue to ready their houses for Christmas festivities, sales of furnishings, chairs and tableware continued their strong performance. Kitchen gadgets - such as Nespresso coffee machines - and sales in china and glass saw significant uplifts showing that dressing the Christmas table is a key focus for shoppers with just a couple of weeks to go before the entertaining season gets into full swing.

Commenting on trade this week, Nat Wakely, Director Selling Operations John Lewis, said: 'We are very pleased to have recorded such a strong uplift in sales this week particularly compared with two years ago when the figures were not skewed by heavy snowfall.

The Humane Society of the United States and The Art Institutes announced Johana Zara from The Art Institute of Vancouver as the grand prize winner of the seventh annual Cool vs. Cruel Fashion Designs Competition.

Matthew Vice from The Art Institute of Dallas placed second, Golden Skyy from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh placed third and Melissa Hoffman from The Art Institute of California — Los Angeles received an honorable mention.

The Cool vs. Cruel Competition challenges Art Institutes students in fashion areas of study throughout the United States and in Vancouver to reinterpret and replace animal fur on runway looks by famous designers. This year’s finalists were selected from among more than 200 entries.

“This program encourages fashion design students to make informed choices by educating them about the millions of foxes, raccoons and other animals who are killed every year for the fur trade,” said Michelle McDonald, fashion outreach manager of the fur-free campaign for The Humane Society of the United States.

As grand prize winner, Zara will receive an expense-paid, weeklong internship in New York City with fur-free designer Victoria Bartlett. Bartlett has judged the Cool vs. Cruel competition for the past two years and was the recipient of The HSUS’s 2010 Compassion in Fashion award. Zara earned the prize with her Fendi-inspired piece using long faux-fur, faux-suede and polyester chiffon.

“I’m amazed by the creativity of these future designers,” Bartlett said. “I’m hoping that in the coming years, more designers will begin making compassionate choices and move away from the cruelty of fur.”

The mother-daughter duo has launched the new clothing line at Macy's departmental store in New York. They were assisted in this latest venture by their model Taylor Momsen from Gossip Girl.

Lourdes revealed that it is exciting for her to work with her mother, a celebrity and a fashion icon. She has great respect for her style and accomplishments but there were certain decision making issues on which both of them had some disagreements.

Reebok are set to launch their latest Reetone television campaign to further publicise the benefts of their Reebok EasyTone toning trainers.

Reebok's toning trainers have been endorsed by Kelly Brook who appeared naked in posters worldwide, wearing nothing but a pair of Reebok EasyTone shoes.

Kate Moss to no more design for Topshop

The successful alliance between supermodel Kate Moss and clothing chain Topshop that persisted for three years, is now towards concluding, the year-end.

The clothing chain has 10 outlets spread across Northern Ireland. Topshop’s autumn and winter collection designed by Moss would be the fourth and last collection of the alliance.

Moss got into this partnership with the clothing chain through her friendship bonds with the chains owner, a retail tycoon, Sir Philip Green. Now, as the alliance sees its end and both parties refute any rift, with owner of the chain saying that they are bringing an end to the collaboration as Moss has other commitments.

The 36 year old model is believed to have taken home at least £3 million for the collections she designed, a majority of which became popular amongst Topshop customers. Three years back, when her first collection was launched by the clothing chain and thousands of people lined up in front of the chains flagship store at Oxford Street.

Fashion face-off: Chelsea Clinton Vs Alicia Keys

It was a weekend of celebrity weddings as both Chelsea Clinton and Alicia Keys took the plunge. Both ladies walked down the aisle in Vera Wang, Chelsea in a strapless A-line number and Alicia in a Grecian inspired frock.

Understandably so when you consider Alicia is an R 'n' B singer and Chelsea is the daughter of the former president.

While Alicia goes for glitz at events (she wore a huge glitter ball gown to one) Chelsea goes for the classic look, opting for shift dress or her trademark blazer, shirt and trousers. And although Chelsea tries to play it casual at times, her look seems to get stuck between preppy and scruffy with flip-flops and frizzy curls.

On the other hand Alicia's casual look is far better put together, usually consisting of jeans. If she decides to wear her hair curly she'll also have it styled and defrizzed.

1. How does Angelina Jolie do it? She seems reallly quite uninterested in fashion, but when she hits the red carpet she is just picture perfect. This Armani sparkling black mini hugs her in all the right places and shows off all her curves to the max. She doesn't seem to have even really bothered too much with her hair and makeup, but its all been done to perfection. So clever!

Model turned designer Angela Chittenden presented her Beach Bunny Swimwear 2011 collection during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) Swim at the Raleigh on July 16, 2010 in Miami Beach, Florida.

This season the show made new waves with their sexy bikinis, hot one-pieces and sizzling loungewear.

In the signature style of Beach Bunny, voluptuous models strutted their stuff presenting the new looks that were tastefully enticing and feminine, with details such as jewels, lace, snakeskin prints, fringes, cutouts and ruching.

Solid, vibrant shades of purple and turquoise ruled the color hue. Some of the designs had glossy look of leather.

The show included designs from Kardashians for Beach Bunny Swimwear 2011 collection, developed in collaboration with Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian Odom.

Kourtney, Kim and Khloé, along with the teen star Selena Gomez, watched some of the world's top supermodels, including Sports Illustrated's Jessica White and Chrissy Teigen, scorch the runway in their debut collection.

"Even though Beach Bunny Swimwear has its own established collection, we each wanted to make sure we put our own twist on it and each were separated by our own personalities," Kim Kardashian said before the show.

Kim's Divinity collection includes tie-sides which are her favorite bottoms to wear that are accented with copper hardware to make it more glam.

Her sister Kourtney Kardashian went with the nautical look in her Sailor Chic collection which gives a Modern Day twist to the typical nautical theme with pieces in navy, white and solid orange. As a new mom, Kourtney wanted to design pieces that were sexy but still practical for chasing after her son Mason.

Khloé Kardashian Odom said she wanted pieces that were "fun, but a lot of coverage and still really young and sexy." Her Modern Majestic collection incorporates her favorite color purple and snake print that adds some flair. Khloé said her favorite design was a cool gun metal one-piece that looks like it has been shredded but still covers all the right areas.

The Kardashians for Beach Bunny Swimwear 2011 collection will have several release dates throughout the year with its first delivery scheduled for October 1, 2010. All designs from the Kardashian's collection will retail for $175 and will be sold on beachbunnyswimwear.com in addition to retail stores worldwide.

Angela Chittenden, who modeled swimsuits for several top magazines and catalogues and is based in Newport Beach, California, launched her own line of swimwear, Beach Bunny Swimwear in 2004.

If there's one thing we can count on the fashion industry for, it is an ability to expand our vocabulary. Of course, we're not talking high-brow prose here but rather the ridiculous terminology adopted by fashion folk to describe the season's must-have piece of clothing.

First there were jeggings, then carrot-top trousers and, lest we forget, the late Nineties skirt-over-trouser phenomenon, the skouser. This summer, to our delight and amusement, there's a new piece of fashion vocabulary occupying the style pages: the monokini.
